Climate

Australia is a huge country (it is bigger than Europe) so there are many areas that have very particular climatic characteristics, depending on the latitude in which they are located.
In Australia, summer goes from December to March, with average temperatures of 29ºC (84 ºF). And winter runs from June to August, with average temperatures of around 13 ºC (55,4 ºF).
Below, I will make a brief explanation of the climate depending on the area:

East-coast: Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.

The East coast of Australia, it is the most populated area in the country and the one that receives the most tourists, it has a mild climate. Oceanic waters soften temperatures in the coastal areas. The farther north (Brisbane, Gold Coast), is the hottest place in this coast, and the farther south (Melbourne), is the coldest.
The summers are warm with warm nights. The winters, on the other hand, are cool and rainy but they also have many sunny days (temperatures are between 10 ºC and 18 ºC ( 50 ºF and 64,4 ºF)).

Western Australia: Perth

The climate in the state of Western Australia, where Perth is located, can be considered the Mediterranean. The summers are hot and dry, and the winters are mild and rainy.
The coastal areas to the south are a bit colder due to the winds that arrive from Antarctica. However, Perth and its surroundings have a very, very pleasant climate all year round. Not surprisingly, Perth is the city in the world that receives more hours of sunshine throughout the year.

North: Darwin and Cairns

This area of Australia is the one around the Tropic of Capricorn. The weather in this northern area is humid and warm throughout the year. These areas, in fact, have only two seasons: winter (from May to October), warm and dry with mild nights; and summer (from November to April), which is very warm, humid and rainy.

The desert of Australia

The climate in the Australian desert – known as outback – is very warm and dry. Temperatures are high, both in summer and winter and also, during the night and day.

In the desert, the temperatures of the interior can be unpredictable: it may not rain for years or it could happen that a torrential rain floods areas with mountainous depressions and gives rise to natural lakes, such as Lake Eyre. Warmer temperatures arrive on wet days in general.

Accommodation

My favorite way and the cheapest way to travel is by van! Rent or buy a van and travel all around the country (only if you have a lot of time, Australia is huge)!! Renting a van is really cheap as you have everything you need inside, your house with wheels!
Also, there are a lot of hostels and motels for accessible prices. For example, you will be able to book a bed in a shared room with bathroom for 10-15$/night. Motels have similar prices and, in smaller cities, they substitute hostels.
The most expensive option is the hotels. I do not recommend this as it is very expensive and in some hostels, you can also find the option of a private room which will be cheaper.

Transport

A very usual way of traveling in Australia is by van. The second-hand market of vans in the country is highly developed and you will be able to find multiple offers depending on your budget. You will have plenty of campsites to charge your van with the basic facilities needed on the way and it is full of free camping sites you will need to get informed about the legal aspects of free camping depending on the state you are in. It is a great way to travel as you can stop anywhere you want and you have full flexibility.

You also have this option:
Relocation: some travelers rent cars or vans in one city and finish the route in another city. Then, Car renting companies need people to bring their cars back. If this is the situation, you’ll be able to have a car or a van for free or for a very little amount of money. The inconvenient is that you need to accomplish the times of the company. But you travel in a car or van for free!!

By plane

Regarding traveling by plane… main international airports are located in Sidney, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth, and Coolangatta. As it is a huge country there are much more airports, but the most used ones are the previously mentioned. Traveling inside Australia is normally cheap. It is a great option to take into account the distance in the country are really big.

Public transport

Traveling to Australia by bus is one of the best ways to get to know the country if you don’t want to spend too much money on transportation.
There is a Hop on-Hop off Pass, that means, that you start in one city and end in another. During the tour, you can get off and on as many times as you want, but always in the same direction, you can’t go back. For example, if you want to go from Sydney to Cairns (2.400 Km), it cost 303 $ per head. This is the most popular journey as you will travel through all the east coast. Food

Main dishes in Australia are:

  • Kangaroo: in Australia, the population of kangaroos doubles the number of people, so people eat them to avoid overpopulation. Either roasted, grilled or baked it is delicious. It is one of the native dishes in Australia. It can be seasoned with garlic, pepper, and rosemary. It is very tasty!

  • Vegemite: it is very typical among Australians. It is one of the meals that Australians feel especially proud of. It is nothing more than a jar of a spreadable paste of a strong brown color and salty flavor. It is made with yeast extract and is consumed by both children and adults. Any time of the day is ideal to take a couple of slices of bread, toast and spread Vegemite on them.

  • Crocodile: it is one of the highlights among the typical Australian food. It is not a dish that is eaten often, but it is seen as a real delicacy. Those who have tried it say that crocodile meat has great similarity to the pig, in terms of texture. Although the flavor is more similar to that of the chicken. As strange as it may seem, the truth is that the nutritional values of this tasty meat are enviable. It barely has fat, and it has a high protein value.
