How to get from Bangkok to Thailand

Even though 670 Km separates Bangkok from Chiang Mai, it is not difficult to get from the capital to this awesome hippie town.

By plane

If you are on a tight itinerary you may probably want to save time and fly. The flight lasts 1 hour and 10 minutes and it is very cheap. Obviously it depends on the season but you could buy a ticket for around 30$ is you are lucky.

Airports in Chiang Mai

There is one airport in Chiang Mai: The international airport of Chiang Mai.  As Chiang Mai is a very important starting point for a lot of travelers (nationals nor internationals) to discover Thailand, the airport in Chiang Mai is getting more important with the years with a lot of international visitors per week. It is also very good located only 10 minutes far from the city center.

Take a train

The train departs from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Station every day going to Chiang Mai. The journey could last 15 hours and it can be very uncomfortable if you are traveling in third class (the cheapest option). The second class is a little bit more expensive but it could be worth it. Tickets costs around 15 $. I clearly recommend you traveling on the night trains, it is an excellent option and you will be able to save the money on accommodation that night and you won lode time during the day with displacements.

By bus

Buses depart in Bangkok from Bangkok’s Mo Chit Bus Station (the Northern Bus Station) and arrive in Chiang Mai at the Arcade Bus Station. It departs regularly during the day and during the night and cost around 20 $. The journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by bus lasts around 12 hours. Same as the train, I’ll go for the night option to save some money on accommodation.

You can but cheap fly, train and bus tickets here.

Regarding Accommodation in Chiang Mai and main touristic attractions in Chiang Mai, I’ll advise you to read the article about my ultimate itinerary in Thailand where you’ll get the last insights and recommendations your need to know before arriving in Chiang Mai.
